| Neighbourhoods
As experienced Realtors, we have had the opportunity to work
all over the City of Ottawa. We have lived and worked in Ottawa’s
communities and can help you decide which one is right for
you. Whether you are looking to be in a vibrant urban hotspot,
a tree-lined residential neighbourhood or a brand new development
we can guide you through the process.
Here are just a few of the fantastic neighbourhoods you will
find in Ottawa:
The Glebe
Located just south of the downtown core, the Glebe is a wonderful
community steeped in history and character. The area is bordered
by the Queensway to the north, Bronson Avenue to the west
and the Rideau Canal to the east and south.
Just a short stroll from virtually any house in the neighbourhood
will bring you to Bank Street, the area’s main commercial
outlet. Here you will find trendy coffee shops, local eateries
and premiere shops. One of the things that attracts people
to this area is having access to these services on foot. Urban
professionals appreciate the easy commute to work and play.
The Rideau Canal is a perfect spot to go for a morning run,
an evening stroll or a weekend bike ride with the kids. Not
to mention that having a skating rink this long virtually
in your backyard is pretty spectacular! The area is also home
to many great parks and schools, making it a popular choice
for families.
Old Ottawa South
Heading south on Bank Street, as you go over the Rideau Canal,
you will find Old Ottawa South. This vibrant community is
rich in spirit and activity. The area is bordered by the Rideau
Canal to the north, Carleton University to the West and the
Rideau River to the east and south.
Antique shops, quaint local pubs, coffee shops and boutiques
line Bank Street making this a pedestrian-friendly community.
The Ottawa Public Library has a busy branch located in the
heart of Old Ottawa South and the Old Firehall Community Centre
is an important meeting place for the areas residents.
Old Ottawa South is home to some of the best parks and schools
in the city! Brewer Park and Windsor Park are favourite spots
for parents and children alike. Access to the bike paths,
public transit and the canal make this the perfect spot for
those who prefer to leave the car at home.
Old Ottawa East
The neighbourhood just east of the canal is called Old Ottawa
East. This area is bordered by the Rideau Canal to the north
and west, and the Rideau River which wraps around part of
this community along its eastern and southern borders.
A quaint commercial strip along Main Street allows local
residents to have quick access to health foods, a delicious
vegetarian restaurant, pharmacy and local coffee shop, among
other services. The recent addition of high-end condo projects
and new infill housing has added a modern flair to this established
community. Its long-time residents cherish the quiet, residential
feel.
Old Ottawa East is filled with fantastic parkland, and is
virtually surrounded by walking routes and bike paths, making
it the ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts, dog-lovers
and active families.
Golden Triangle
The Golden Triangle is dynamic and highly desireable quadrant
of Centretown. It is bordered by Elgin Street to the west,
the Courthouse to the north and the Queensway to the north.
Its predominant feature, though, is the canal, which runs
along its eastern border. You would be hard-pressed to find
a resident of the Golden Triangle who doesn’t use the
canal for one activity or another!
Despite its proximity to the restaurants, pubs and nightlife
along Elgin Street, the area’s residents find much quiet
along residential streets. This small neighborhood offers
great schools, several parks, a community center complete
with pool and a strong sense of community. Its older period
homes are interspersed with newer infill and range from apartments
to large single-family homes.
The Golden Triangle is a stone’s throw to the Rideau
Center, Byward market, Parliament Hill, museums and galleries.
The recent addition of a pedestrian walkway provides direct
access to Ottawa University.
West Centretown/Preston Street
Just west of the downtown core is the eclectic and popular
“Little Italy.” The neighbourhood is bordered
by Albert Street to the north, Carling Avenue to the south
and extends about a block west of Preston where it intersects
with Hintonburg. Its geography makes it an ideal location
for commuters.
Though the neighbourhood has a rich history and has always
enjoyed a strong community pride, recent years have seen increased
popularity, especially with young urban professionals. The
new addition of large high tech office towers and government
buildings along Preston Street have brought about even more
interest in this urban hot-spot.
At the corner of Preston and Somerset sits the re-modeled
Plant Recreation Centre, a modern facility enjoyed by a diverse
range of community members. Preston Street is known for its
fanastic restaurants, which suit a wide range of tastes. Whether
you prefer Italian, Thai, or Modern Pub Fare, you will certainly
be satisfied here. You can even pop in to the local gelateria
on your walk home!
Hintonburg
Located west of Preston Street (the O-Train tracks to be
precise) is the diverse, creative and historic community of
Hintonburg. This area is bordered by Scott Street to the north,
the Queensway to the south and Holland Street to the west.
The Ottawa Citizen recently described Hintonburg as Ottawa's
“newest 'it' community” and that “residents
like the funky, affordable, multi-cultural and multi-generational
aspects of their neighbourhood.”
Restaurants, local art galleries and shops line Wellington
Street, the areas commercial strip. At the corner of Holland
and Wellington you will find the new home for the Great Canadian
Theatre Company, assisting this neighbourhood in emerging
as an arts hot-spot for the city. Enjoy a stroll to the Parkdale
Market to pick up your fresh produce and stop in at one of
local coffee shops for a latte.
Hintonburg boasts quick access to bike paths along the Ottawa
River, which can be used for your commute to work and weekend
recreation. The community is home to great little parks, fantastic
schools and a spirit that is insurmountable!
Alta Vista
Often referred to as the closest “suburb” to
downtown, Alta Vista is bordered by the Rideau River to the
north, banks Street to the west, Heron Road to the south and
a strip of green space to the west. Perhaps its greatest assets
are its proximity to the hospitals and its short commute to
downtown combined with generous-sized lots.
Alta Vista’s various pockets offer slightly different
variations of 1950’s and 1960’s-built homes with
some areas boasting many new, large, high-end homes, particularly
in Faircrest Heights, the area closest to the hospitals. Alta
Vista is home to a diverse demographic and house styles ranging
from brick bungalows to two-story family homes.
Many active residents of Alta Vista find the area close enough
to cycle to work, but for those who don’t transit is
easily found in all corners. There are several schools and
many parks plus access to the river bike paths, all of which
make the neighbourhood appealing to those seeking space and
proximity to downtown.
